The Right Brain Experience - using the creative side

left side brain imageThe right brain is the source of creativity and intuition. This is apparently true for approximately 95% of the population, especially right handed males. And it is often the portion of the brain function that is made dormant by the dominating left brain functions of reason and logic.

Responding to a comment about using clip art, Katerina Gassett, a well known real estate agent in Florida, made a comment in one of her blog posts that  a strong right brain is not needed  to add creative art to a blop post if you have a good clip art source. And she of course was correct in that, but I have since been looking into developing a more creative side in my thinking.

The last three books I have read make reference to the power and functionality and necessity of being creative.

This is an area in which I have been lacking. I can reason and I can work. But generally my brushes with creativity have been in appreciation of the creative talents of others.

Tom Hopkins calls for creativity in a profession. He recommends that work become a hobby and be approached with "energy, enthusiasm, excitement, ferver, anticipaton, devotion, and sheer fun." Such describe the attitude taken when one is engaged in a pursuit chosen as a hobby. It is an attitude of passion.

How to think like Einstein has many wonderful quotes, from Einstein and others. " When I examine myself and my methods of thought, I come to the conclusion that the gift of fantasy has meant more to me than my talent for absorbing positive knowledge." Albert Einstein.

Most recently for me, The Right Brain Experience, by Marilee Zdenek, documents the science of the right brain and provides some excercises for developing the creative function of the brain. She quotes from an interview with Charles Schulz:

"But the main thing is that I think about the strip all the time, almost continually. Not from a business standpoint....I am obsessed with what I do. It's my whole life - the same way as a person may be a playwright or a violinist or a painter.... I have discovered a perfect outlet for all of my thinking."

The mortgage crisis has of necessity forced me to conduct business differently. I knew it needed to be different. I just did not know what it needed to be.

Working in the Internet, blogging, social networking, photography, video, localism, networking, all this has opened for me new ideas, and a pursuit for creativity. It has enabled me to look at my work as a hobby, as an outlet for expression.

The right brain experience means opening to possibilities, welcoming new ideas and approaches. When applied to business, it can make the job an outlet for creativity and expression.

I am working on it.
